All but a few of the foodstuffs depicted in Nearly Eternal are actually plastic display models. “I’ve seen these models for years in Japan and I’ve always been fascinated by them,” explains the book’s co-creator, the photographer Norbert Schoerner who planned the book over the course of a year with his longtime collaborator, the art director Steve Nakamura, which involved visiting plastic food sample manufacturers scattered around the Japanese countryside. One manufacturer, Maiduru, invited them to borrow 50 models for the project (the replicas are surprisingly expensive) from archives and current stock. By selecting atmospheric locations in Tokyo hotels and cafes designed “when Japan was in the economic boom, bubble era” Schoerner and Nakamura storyboarded the shoots as though they were producing a film, further developing an uneasy narrative between reality and artifice, product and desire.
