Fernell Franco was a key member of the 1970s emerging art scene of Cali, Colombia along with writer Andrés Caicedo, filmmakers Luis Ospina and Carlos Mayolo and artists Oscar Muñoz and Ever Astudillo, all united by their interest in popular culture. Fernell was especially influenced by the aesthethics Italian Neorealism cinema and film noir that inspired many of his documentary series on Cali nightlife including “Prostitutes (1970-72)”.
