Gerhard Richter's monumental, encyclopedic Atlas is an ongoing work that Richter began in 1962 when he decided to put together photographs that had been or could become pictorial sources for his paintings. This "archive" bears witness to the fusion between his paintings and photography; and to his fascination with, and analysis of, contemporary languages of representation and their functions. First exhibited in 1972 it consisted of 315 parts, this catalogue was for the first presentation of Atlas on a grand scale at the Stadtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munchen and then the Museum Ludwig, Koln where it had grown to some 600 panels of nearly 4,000 parts. It remains Richter's signature work. Item #7979
