Ihei Kimura’s Paris was photographed during three of his visits to the city between 1954 and 1960. Published in 1974 (the year of the photographer’s death) Paris solidified his distinctive compositions of cool blues, greys, browns, and purples, while simultaneously affirming his ability to coordinate this palate within a documentary setting. Kimura’s use of color film at this time in the history of photography was nothing short of a revolutionary approach. The images present a pictorially tailored tourist, a nostalgic vision of the city’s crumbling textures mitigated by a stream-of-consciousness type gallantry. Kimura did not slavishly follow the Japanese tourist’s itinerary, but he was certainly aware of the ‘creative’ Paris, the Paris of painters, filmmakers, and photographers (including that of Henri Cartier-Bresson with whom he stayed when he visited). Kimura sifted Atget’s account, rematerializing the raw romanticism of this iconic city. Item #12319
