Philip-Lorca diCorcia’s Hustlers series was taken over twenty years ago in Los Angeles, on and around Santa Monica Blvd. In 1993 21 of the series were exhibited at MoMA and diCorcia became recognized as one of the most important photographers of his generation. It features male prostitutes posing for the camera for a fee equivalent to what they would charge for sex. In a deliberately controversial gesture DiCorcia paid the subjects with grant money from the National Endowment for the Arts. This during a period of censorship of NEA-supported exhibitions by Robert Mapplethorpe, Andres Serrano, and other artists. This oversized publication features many previously unpublished photographs.
