This photobook contains a series of photographs by Mao Ishikawa taken between 1975 and 1977 when she worked as a Hostess in the bars on Okinawa, an island that lies to the South of Japan. There has been a large American military presence on the island since the end of the Second World War and Ishikawa’s book examines the impact of this on the native inhabitants of Okinawa. Racially segregated bars were established to cater to the white and African American GI’s; the book focuses on Ishikawa’s circle of female friends and their relationships with the African American GI’s from nearby Camp Hansen who they met while working in those bars. Ishikawa features herself in some of the photographs and, by positioning herself as subject as well as storyteller, provides an authentic and intimate portrayal of the life of a Hostess. The pictures featuring Ishikawa were taken by Toyomitsu Higa. Following publication, some of Ishikawa’s friends objected to being portrayed in the book as many images show the women nude or in bed with their lovers. As a result, Ishikawa removed 6 of the most sensitive pages from almost all copies. Item #16987
