A collection of images of young people (mostly 'boys') in New York, London, Zurich, Istanbul, Beirut, Amsterdam, and Venice, made in the late 1960s. The photographer/author -- a retired American diplomat in his sixties -- became enamored with youth culture after attending a Beatles concert in 1965. In an attempt to understand what was going on -- 'A person is only old when he has lost his interest in young people' is the opening quote in the book -- he began making street portraits and interviewing his subjects. "[T]he whole tenor of the book is one of innocence and appreciation rather than the prurient leering of a dirty old man. First and foremost, this is a celebration of beauty, and it is a valuable social document, a unique snapshot of an era when it was especially exciting to be young. The subtle but unmistakable erotic undertones, however, add a personal level that is both beguiling and mysterious." (Parr & Badger.) Perhaps Berry's personal vision has made this book what Parr & Badger call a "valued . contribution to the gay photobook" but the photographer's stated goal of capturing the 'in' crowd, at the 'in' gathering places, wearing the 'in' clothing trends, has produced an excellent example of early street style photography and a fascinating guide to fashions of the time.
