Lin Zhipeng (aka No.223) is a leading figure in Chinese photography that has emerged in the past decade. He began disseminating his work through social media and other online platforms as well as through his own self-published zines. Naming himself “No. 223” after the police character in Wong Kar-Wai’s movie Chungking Express, Lin also adopts a sense of the Hong Kong director’s poetic and dreamy atmosphere. Often depicting an alternative youth spirit and culture in contrast to conservative mainstream Chinese culture, his spontaneous photographs portray a young generation who indulge in love and life, oscillating between jubilation and deep melancholy. From the authors' preface “I am like a waiter who was given a special identity. At this time, I may be a stranger, perhaps a maker of taste and emotion, maybe a peeper next door, maybe just a recorder using a camera to invade others. The young flesh came in and out. Our communication was limited to the narration of the shutter’s sound and an euphemistic dialogue. This is a colorful room filled with invisible desires and slow laziness. The body appears to be still, or just a dream, because it is not a strong oppressive relationship.” Design by Federico Barbon. Item #19943
