Flash-Up is one of the very best Japanese books of the 1980s. Seiji Kurata continues to explore Japanese photographers’ fascination with nightlife in the footsteps of Moriyama, Araki and Kitajima, Kurata’s photographers are clearer, less purely expressive and more documentary in nature in his depiction of Yakuza gangsters, prostitutes, bikers and clubs. Working in medium format with a penetrating flash the book’s reproduction on glossy pages, it’s silver obi band and plastic acetate cover all add to the sense of contemporary style. Item #2138
