Island is the 4th volume of Gwen Smith’s The Black Woman Project. It incorporates themes from Vol. 1-3 while shifting the lens back to Smith’s own life, archivally re-examining the images of her history and the women within it. She traces this lineage to Martha’s Vineyard and Jamaica, two places with two black cultures, albeit radically different. Island seeks to reconcile Smith’s alienation—both familial and diasporic—by building an exquisite corpse of memories out of her past and present. Item #23535
