"Of the many places I have lived in the United States, LA is the place that reminds me most of where I was born. This being the small border town of McAllen, Texas, to immigrant parents (my mother is Mexican, and my father Colombian). Via the rich abundance of Mexican people and culture woven through the city—which is similar to where I grew up in Texas— in moving to LA, I have easily become connected to the fabric of the city.

Within a few months of living in Los Angeles, I was introduced to an event held the week
of Oct. 28th - Nov. 3, called “El Clásico de las Américas,” which is a charreria, held in Pico Rivera. I became intrigued to learn more about this event due to its cultural associations — in Mexico, char- readas are a prized cultural rodeo-like sport, which I had heard of but never experienced growing up. My intention was to show the charreria through my perspective as a fifirst generation Mexican American. Falling in love with the colors, outfifits, and gear, I decidedly set up a portrait studio to document the unique details of each person, highlighting their beauty and power. The result of which is a series of portraits, mostly focused on the young adults and teenagers, who are so heavily engaged in the event." - Carlos Jaramillo.
