Boris Mikhailov is probably best-known for Case History (Scalo, 1999) here is a far lighter depiction of his hometown of Kharkov in the Ukraine with pictures from the eighties before Perestroika in the photographer’s youth. The book in its twists and turns is filled with remarkably odd and fascinating images: Summery photographs of his girlfriends in the buff, photographic studies of interiors, statues, still-lives, with some gnarly ones thrown in for good measure (and the full Mikhailov flavor). There is a strange color palette here that feels reminiscent of Luigi Ghirri but with a definite Soviet sensibility. It is perfect in its’ scale, the modest elegance of its design. A breath of fresh air, one of those pocket-sized books you want to take with you everywhere. Item #4234
