Hackney Flowers by Stephen Gill, is an utterly charming and deeply satisfying work that evolved from his earlier project Hackney Wick, employing the same rudimentary camera with plastic lens, no focus or exposure controls. He made prints of photographs taken around Hackney, sometimes burying them in the ground to become further degraded. Then laid over them twigs, trash and dried flowers found on walks, re-photographing the assemblages using a high-end medium format camera. The result is a fascinating combination of urban and crafty that contrasts a low-end sensibility with a certain polish. In additional there are several sections bound-in throughout, printed in a smaller format featuring of people of his beloved Hackney that feel like a book within a book. Item #6057
