Bettie Kline starts with the premise that painter Franz Kline and fetish photographers Irving and Paula Klaw both lived and worked at the same Manhattan address during the fifties. The Klaws and Kline were friends, and the painter would sometimes use Irvings models for figure studies, one of which was Bettie Page. By 1952, she became his ‘only’: his subject, his sign, his muse. The artist/model relationship was secret, nobody knew. Richard Prince juxtaposes appropriated images of Bettie Page alongside those of Kline and his works to set up a frisson between the pin-up legend's limbs/torso and the pioneering Abstract Expressionist's bold calligraphic brushstrokes.
