At 18 years old, Ohtake spent a year working on a farm in the countryside of eastern Hokkaido, Japan's frigid northern island. Drawings in pen and ink and charcoal as well as watercolors are sandwiched between blocks of full bleed photography depicting the rugged landscape and agrarian life in an unadorned style. Obviously the period was formative for the young artist and the book published some 30 years is a frenetic dream of his time there; possibly romanticized but highly original nonetheless. In the reduced unrefined b&w there is a nod to the Provoke movement but with none of its Film Noir American references - this is the product of a younger more introspective generation. Item #8880
