Dashwood Books signing for Rich and Poor by Jim Goldberg

From 1977 to 1985, Jim Goldberg photographed the rich and poor of San Francisco, creating a visual document that has since become his landmark work. One of the series' enduring hallmarks has been its radical use of handwritten text incorporated into each portrait in which the subjects were invited to comment on their portraits taken in their own environments. The comments, from glib to delusional to painfully revealing, add a compelling texture to the series.  In 1984 the series was exhibited alongside Robert Adams and Joel Sternfeld in the Three Americans exhibition at MoMA, and published the following year by Random House.  It is now recognized as one of the greatest photo books of the 20th Century.

Out of print since 1985, Jim Goldberg's Rich and Poor has been completely re-designed and expanded by the artist as a new Steidl edition. Available for the first time in hardcover, Rich and Poor builds upon the foundation of the original but adds a surplus of vintage material and contemporary photographs that have never been published or exhibited before.

With current income disparities between the classes only growing, this new edition of Rich and Pooris particularly relevant today. The new edition also includes an accordion insert that features contemporary color photographs of the streets in wealthy and poor neighborhoods in San Francisco that conceptually frames where the rich and poor reside, and ties the vintage works in the book to the present.
