Dashwood Projects is proud to announce the first show of drawings by the artist Carl D’Alvia. Based in West Cornwall, CT, D'Alvia is known for his bronze, marble, and resin sculptures that range from the abstract and geometric to the figurative and anthropomorphic. These sculptures often begin in the form of drawings but they are much more than blueprints for 3D pieces. In the words of Dina Wright from her essay in the book that accompanies the show, "Some drawings feel delicate and airy, their simplicity crisp and neat. These elegant, singular works exude a sense of stillness, reflecting the artist’s affinity for calm. They echo the atmosphere of his studio, nestled deep within the landscape and tucked away from unnecessary clamor. Other works are as dense as a forest, showcasing endless scratchings and erasures. The inky abyss swallows you in whole, suggesting that the act of removal is just as revealing as creation itself."
On view will be 18 drawings of various sizes - as well as two small sculptures - from over 20 years of the artist’s career; from sketchbooks to early figurative explorations and contemporary abstract pieces all in a variety of mediums: pencil, Bic ballpoint pen, charcoal and ink. Along with the book of the same name published by Dashwood Books, they delve into the evolution of the artists’ sculptural techniques and the emergence of some of his best know tropes or characters.
"Balking at minimalism whilst taking aim at figuration, Carl has always threaded the needle between seriousness and sappiness, object and idea." DW
Paper Trail will be on view at Dashwood Projects February 20th through March 22nd at 63 East 4th Street, New York, NY.
