Larry Clark and James Gilroy first met in downtown New York in the early 1970s. A lifelong friendship began amid the long disorder of a drug infested, artistic era; both artists had already been around the block at least twice before they met. Their connection was instant and permanent. This book contains oral histories of strange and bizarre events in their parallel lives, amplified by Clark’s photographs and Gilroy’s drawings. Their audacious recollections of more youthful years are bold, vulgar, hilarious and totally engrossing. A bond of friendship stretching over 50 years vibrates on every page. This project began when two best friends, both natural raconteurs, sat down to revisit stories from the time of their youth. Playing off one another, ten stories were told in a single day. Each tale is preserved and presented in its natural form; as a transcription of a lost voice recording. The book moves, warps, and stretches itself over many years, ranging from the ‘50s through the ‘70s and beyond.
