I photograph women on the street, identifying with those who attract my attention through their style, gesture, attitude, and mood as I aspire to capture their moving aura. As a woman photographing other women, I identify with and embrace the evolving idea of the feminine intrigued by the various ways women define themselves. Intuitively aware of female representation in public space, Avenue Femme is a collection of images of women in unguarded moments, each image an intimate view of women encountered on the street in a series of urban locations particular to each. As one turns the pages of the book, I hope to create a feeling of the serendipitous surprise of turning a street corner to experience a chance encounter with the sight of a captivating woman or a compelling street scene. I aim to capture expressions of female experience and to convey in these diverse encounters their unique individuality, sexuality, and sense of self formed by social experience, and by an act of empathy and connection, their boldness and vulnerability. The images are narratives of self-expression and feminine identity played out in contemporary public space formed by the conventions and fantasies of society. Many of the stylish and seductively confident women I’m drawn toward with my lens unconsciously perform for me as if the street were their fashion runway. Their identity is shaped by being seen. With other women more subtle and singular by nature, by capturing the beauty of their isolated selfhood, the photograph becomes an evocation of an emotion. I seek to exalt women’s presence and individuality in existential truth by capturing the weight of a feeling or situation candidly. The series of images portray the varied female guise, visual representations of identity formed and influenced by place, culture, and gender that frame and document our cultural age. JP. Item #30497
