Takashi Homma's Portrait of J offers a steady, unflashy ledger of 111 Japanese faces photographed over two decades, and the power lies in its restraint. The images are set in everyday backdrops such as city streets, shop interiors, or plain facades, yet Homma isolates each subject in a buffer of space so the person emerges with quiet insistence.

Skin tones are rendered with a certain clarity of light, eyes caught in poise or drift, posture that speaks more than gaze. There is no elaborate staging or imposed narrative; instead the work trusts that a glance, a slight tilt of the head, or the curve of a shoulder yields its own resonance.
