Book signing with Chloe Dewe Mathews

Wednesday, Oct 24, 2018 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Please join us on Wednesday October 24th for a book signing from 6-8pm with the British artist Chloe Dewe Mathews.
We will be featuring two recent books: Caspian: The Elements published by Aperture and In Search of Frankenstein published by the Kodoji Press.

Caspian: The Elements is a record of five years spent roaming the borderlands of the Caspian Sea. In a resource-rich region roiled by contested geopolitics, Dewe Mathews found that elemental materials like oil, rock, and uranium are central to the mystical, practical, artistic, religious, and therapeutic aspects of daily life. With essays by Morad Montazami, Sean O’Hagan, and Arnold van Bruggen, Caspian: The Elements offers a series of powerful visual narratives that explore the deep links between the peoples of the Caspian and their enigmatic and coveted landscapes.

In In Search of Frankenstein, Mathews’s photographs of the alpine landscape that inspired Mary Shelley's classic novel are juxtaposed with her series depicting a network of eerie subterranean bunkers, built in the 1960s to shelter the entire population of Switzerland in the event of a nuclear disaster.  The book designed by Winfried Heininger features her work alongside what’'s known as the Geneva Notebook, the first half of Shelley’s original manuscript. The author’s scrawled handwriting, with crossed-out words and inky additions, contrasts in its spirited energy to the stark mountains and human-made tunnels that bore through the landscape.
