Dashwood Projects presents Bedtime Stories for Bad Boys and Girls, an exhibition of photographs by Larry Clark and drawings by James Gilroy.

Larry Clark and James Gilroy first met in downtown New York in the early 1970s. A lifelong friendship began amid the long disorder of a drug infested, artistic era; both artists had already been around the block at least twice before they met. Their connection was instant and permanent.

The photographs and drawings by Clark and Gilroy amplify the strange and bizarre events of the parallel lives detailed in the accompanying book to this exhibition.

Their audacious recollections of more youthful years are bold, vulgar, hilarious, and totally engrossing.

This project began when two best friends, both natural raconteurs, sat down to revisit stories from the time of their youth. Playing off one another, ten stories were told in a single day. Each tale is preserved and presented in its natural form; as a transcription of a lost voice recording.

The book and exhibition moves, warps, and stretches itself over many years, ranging from the 1950s through the ‘70s and beyond. These unvarnished tales tell of being young and delirious and having piercing revelations of life and death—frequently living too close to both.
